Principles
This is admittedly a concept that has been collecting dust in an “idea” notebooks for several months… I attended an event with a simple and valuable format (9 speakers were given 10 minutes each to share 10 ideas. 90 Ideas in 90 Minutes.) Following the event, I considered the question; “if it were me, what would I share?”
The motivation to dust if off comes from a recently released book- “Principles” by Ray Dalio. The premise of the book is similar to the idea of this “90 in 90” event; Dalio shares nuggets of wisdom that he has collected over the years from his experiences, both successes and even failures. In a recent interview, Dalio challenged listeners to do the same; identify what are the lessons you’ve learned (Principles)? Write them down, and share them.My 10 Principles:

- Know your strengths. Maximize the time you spend in areas in which you are strongest.
- Write it down! Two concepts tied to this principle; the power of a journaling practice and the significant role writing plays in learning and retention.
- Be present.
- Know people. Take the time to appreciate everyone’s uniqueness. Relationships matter.
- “Power Up.” A mantra I’ve used to recognize when a certain situation requires extra confidence and energy.
- E+R=O (Event + Response = Outcome). A simple equation with roots in Stoic philosophy. Focus your energy and attention on what you can control.
- Read more…a LOT more. Reading accelerates learning, adds depth, and sparks creativity.
- Options thinking. Counterbalance the trap of “this is our only option” or “this is great, we have to do this” by developing and analyzing additional options.
- Manage the press. Communication is the life blood of relationships and organizations. Utilize this mantra as a communication strategy; control the message.
- Ego is the enemy. One of the tenants of Stoicism. Be Humble. Be Aware.
What are principles that have impacted you? How have you applied the lessons learned?
